The Manhattan district attorney has classified two recent antigay attacks in New York City's Greenwich Village as hate crimes.

According to NY1, the most recent attack involved an incident at Julius, a gay bar in the neighborhood for decades.

"On Monday, October 11, police say Frederick Giunta walked into Julius, shouted racial and anti-gay epithets and slugged the bartender. The victim was filling in for bartender Alex Michaels."

Giunta was arrested Friday and charged with felony assault as a hate crime and attempted robbery. The Manhattan district attorney's hate crimes unit is prosecuting the case.

The incident at Julius follows an attack at the historic Stonewall Inn, where two men allegedly beat another man while shouting antigay slurs in the bathroom. Throughout the New York area, reported hate crimes in recent weeks include a brutal antigay gang-related attack in the Bronx and an assault against a teenager on a bus in Long Island.
