Democratic Senate candidate Paul Hodes has asked the editors of the Union Leader newspaper to change their policy banning gay marriage announcements.
The Manchester-based Union Leader, New Hampshire's largest newspaper, refuses to publish same-sex marriage announcements, even though gay marriage is legal in New Hampshire. Publisher Joe McQuaid says the paper's management doesn't believe in marriage equality and they have a right to print whatever they see fit.
Hodes, running to replace retiring U.S. senator Judd Gregg, has called on the Union Leader to respect state law and publish the announcements. Representatives for Republican opponent Kelly Ayotte say she has no place to tell a free press what to do.
