Fraternity Group Responds to Emory Party Scandal
A coalition of fraternities and sororities has condemned an incident at Emory University last weekend in which a gay student was allegedly dragged from an off-campus party to cheers from other attendees, the Emory Wheel reports.
"We were alarmed to hear the allegations of mistreatment experienced by an Emory student last Friday night and are deeply saddened by the hurt it has caused to the entire Emory community and to the individual," the coalition wrote in a Thursday letter. "We hope that he is well and knows that we, as a Greek community, support him."
However, the Greek groups took issue with news reports that the altercation occurred at a "frat party" and called the individual in question the "alleged antagonist" who is not currently an Emory student.
"Many individuals within the Greek system are also deeply hurt and angered by the promotion of a sweeping stereotype of intolerance, a stereotype many Greek organizations across the nation continuously work to combat," representatives of the Interfraternity, Intersorority, and National Pan-Hellenic Councils wrote. "We ask that the Emory community remember that all stereotypes are harmful."
