The religious right group Family Research Council is demanding an apology from the Southern Poverty Law Center after the SPLC, a civil rights organization, labeled the FRC a "hate group" because of its antigay rhetoric.

Earlier this week FRC was included in alist of 18 hate groups because, as the SPLC's winter 2010 Intelligence Report explains, the group has "continued to pump out demonizing propaganda aimed at homosexual and other sexual minorities."

In demanding an apology, FRC president Tony Perkins called the Southern Poverty Law Center "a massively funded liberal organization that operates under a veneer of public justice when, in fact, they seem more interested in fundraising ploys than fighting wrongdoing."

Perkins added, "This is a deliberate timed smeared campaign by the SPLC. The Left is losing the battle over ideas and the direction of public policy so all that is left for them is character assassination."
