Zach Wahls, a University of Iowa student who testified before the state house of representatives against repealing marriage equality in the state, has a huge fan in Ellen DeGeneres.
White appearing on the comedian's daytime talk show, he said while he was unable to change the position of the lawmakers in Iowa with his speech, he did sway one person.
Wahls said he received a message from a soldier who described himself as antigay, and said he was anxious about the impending repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." The soldier said that after seeing Wahls's testimony, he experienced a change of heart.
Wahls, who was raised by his lesbian mothers (his biological mom appeared with him on the show), said he was nervous about his speech, which took off online earlier this month, but he was happy to have the opportunity to speak to the lawmakers who could make the decision changing many families.
"The scary thing is that they're lawmakers," he said. "They're supposed to protect us, not take our laws away."
