Director John Waters says his late friend and muse Divine was so obsessed with Elizabeth Taylor that he wanted to be her and even dressed as her to go on a date with a woman, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Waters is such a fan of Boom!, a poorly received film adaptation of a Tennessee Williams play that costarred Taylor and her former husband Richard Burton, that he's hosted screenings of it around the country. When he was invited to a holiday party at Taylor's Los Angeles home, he told her how much he loves the film and she thought he was insulting her. When she realized he was sincere, Waters found her "lovely and nice and really sweet."

Waters also shares that Taylor was Divine's idol. "If you look at some of the moves we made, like Multiple Maniacs, you can see we were paying tribute to her," Waters says. "Divine wanted to be Elizabeth Taylor. Divine once went on some date dressed as Elizabeth Taylor -- dressed as Elizabeth Taylor, he picked up his female date. There's photos of that -- I don't have them, but I've seen them."
