Father Charged With Killing Daughter’s Girlfriend, Mother
Police in Austin said that Jose Alfonso Aviles, upset that his daughter was in a lesbian relationship, shot and killed her girlfriend and the girlfriend's mother Monday evening.
The Austin American Statesman, which did not identify the 18-year-old daughter of the suspect, said she was in the home of her girlfriend in southeast Austin at the time of the shooting. She found Norma Hurtado, 24, and her mother, Mario Hurtado, 57, after they were shot.
"The daughter told police that she and Norma Hurtado had been involved in a lesbian relationship, which her father did not approve of, and that there had been disturbances between Aviles and Norma Hurtado, according to an arrest affidavit," reports the Statesman. "An online records search for those incidents turned up a report of a sexual assault in September and a family disturbance in October; however, police did not release details of the incidents."
Aviles, 45, fled the scene of the double murder in a green-sport utility vehicle with a second, unidentified man still at large. Aviles was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with capital murder, which could result in the death penalty or life imprisonment. The Travis County district attorney's office has not determined whether to categorize the case as a hate crime.
