New York Flag to Fly in S.F.’s Castro

In honor of the Empire State's passage of marriage equality, the New York State flag will be raised in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood this weekend.

The Merchants of Upper Market and Castro voted unanimously last week to display the East Coast's state's flag below the oversize rainbow flag that currently flies over the Castro from noon Saturday to Monday evening to celebrate the same-sex marriages that will be legal in New York starting Sunday.

While there are still technical details to be figured out -- such as whether or not two flags will fit on the same flag pole -- feelings of solidarity with New York are running high.

"With all that has gone on in California the board feels this is something we should do," said Steve Adams, a banker and president of the merchants group. "We want to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in New York."
