Gay Brother of Aussie MP Speaks Out
The half-brother of an unabashedly antigay member of Australia's parliament has publicly come out as gay and gone on the record to challenge his older sibling's "hurtful and dangerous" views on homosexuality.
Speaking to television interviewer George Negus on Austalia's Ten News, Carl Katter expressed disgust at statements made by Bob Katter on the subject of gay marriage.
"Whenever I see him on the news, I turn him off," Carl told Negus. "It's hurtful, it's dangerous, it's damaging, and it's really inappropriate. It doesn't give any support to his argument by perpetuating hate and discrimination."
Carl said he chose to come out publicly as a way to offset the "disgusting behavior" he has witnessed from antigay politicians like his brother.
"I couldn't sit by and let that happen in a country that I'm rather proud of," he said of statements made last week during Marriage Day at parliament. "I thought we [as a country] were not discriminatory to any groups."
