Leo as J. Edgar Hoover: Is The Gay Content Intact?
The first peek at Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as J. Edgar Hoover in the upcoming biopic indicates there's at least a suggestion of the intimate relationship between the FBI chief and protege Clyde Tolson.
In the clip, Hoover tells Tolson he needs someone he can trust and they later grasp hands in the back seat of a car. Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black has previously dismissed reports that director Clint Eastwood has degayed the film and Armie Hammer, who plays Tolson, revealed that there were several kissing scenes between the two men in the screenplay. Yet, last month Eastwood told Entertainment Weekly that Hoover's sexuality is left open to the audience's interpretation.
Regardless, the role will give DiCaprio, one of the most talented actors of his generation, an opportunity to show his range. As Hoover he's required to age from his 30s to his 70s. The film is filled with many notable actors, including Judi Dench, Dermot Mulroney, and Naomi Watts.
J. Edgar will premiere at the American Film Institute festival on November 3 before opening in limited release November 9.
