Trailblazing superstar Barbra Streisand was feted at a star-studded gala last night and encouraged other women to create material and tell stories.
Streisand was among nine top Hollywood female stars who were honored at Elle magazine's 18th Annual Women in Hollywood Tribute in Beverly Hills. Jennifer Aniston, Freida Pinto, Evan Rachel Wood, Naomi Watts, Michelle Pfeiffer, Viola Davis, Dreamworks chief Stacey Snider, and newcomer Elizabeth Olsen were the other honorees, but much of the attention was focused on a rare public appearance by Streisand, who picked up the L'Oreal Paris Legend award.
Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, who was presented the best director Oscar for 2009's The Hurt Locker by Streisand, called her "a world icon" and "somebody who has mastered virtually every art form imaginable: directing, acting, composing, singing, producing, writing," when she introduced her on stage.
Slumdog Millionaire's Pinto said she was honored to be "sharing the same oxygen" with Streisand. "You're a legend not only in Hollywood but literally all over the world," Pinto said to Streisand. "I can say that because I come from India."
During her acceptance speech, Streisand spoke about the dearth of female filmmakers, saying, "Let's be bold and don't wait for the phone to ring. Create your own material. Tell me a story."
