Indian artist Balbir Krishan, a double amputee, was viciously attacked Thursday at a New Delhi gallery where he was showing his gay-themed work.

A man wearing a handkerchief over his face burst into the exhibition space at Lalit Kala Academy, shoved Krishan, damaged one of his paintings, hurled antigay threats, and then kicked the artist, who wears prosthetic legs following a train accident. Fellow artists attempted to chase down the attacker, but he managed to escape.

Krishan told police that he had received threatening phone messages leading up to the attack. Krishan's work has been moved to another gallery and police are investigating the incident.

"I never thought something like this could happen here," an injured Krishan told The Times of India. "If my paintings offend anyone, they are welcome to discuss it with me." Read more here.
