Metro Transit Police say a transgender woman was stabbed Thursday night at a bus stop in Washington, D.C.

WUSA9.com reports that the victim, whose name is not known, was taken to the hospital in grave condition after being stabbed in the head at approximately 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of East Capitol Street N.E. and Sycamore Road.

The suspect is an African-American male in his 40s.

The past year has seen a disturbing increase in violence against transgender people, including 23-year-old Lashai Mclean, who was shot to death in northeast D.C. in July.
