Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani criticized the Republican Party for its archaic approach to social issues, specifically marriage equality, saying it "seems to be not modern enough."

"I think the gay rights issue is a more current one right now, and I think beyond all the religious and social parts of it, it makes the party look like it isn't a modern party, it doesn't understand the modern world that we live in," Giuliani said in a Thursday interview with CNN's Erin Burnett.

Giuliani, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, has yet to endorse a presidential candidate, but said of Rick Santorum: "I like Rick's approach to foreign policy. I like Rick's approach to the economy. We have big differences on social issues."
