A jury in New York City on Tuesday found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing former Elle columnist E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s.
The jury did not find him liable for her alleged rape.
On the verdict sheet, the nine-person jury made up of six men and three women checked “yes” on the box that asked if Carroll had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll,” according to NBC News.
The jury checked “no” on the rape allegation.
Trump was also found to have defamed Carroll after posting to his Truth Social platform that Carroll’s accusations were a “hoax” and “a con job.”
In order to have found Trump liable, the jury had to have reached a unanimous decision.
Carroll was awarded $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages, according to Reuters.
The jury deliberated in under three hours.
Carroll, 79, accused Trump, 76, of raping her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store. She said that Trump then defamed her by attacking her claims on social media.
It was a civil case and not a criminal one, so Trump did not face any criminal consequences to the jury's verdict.
