A gay wedding planner was beaten unconscious by bouncers at a Texas nightclub last weekend, and video of the incident has since gone viral.

Norman Reggi Houston-Pickett suffered black and bloodied eyes, a concussion, and a broken leg after being beaten unconscious by security guards at Hamburger Mary’s in Houston on Saturday night. He said such anti-gay bias is becoming more commonplace among bouncers at LGBTQ+ events in the area.

“This is what happens when you take a franchise restaurant and turn it to a nite club and after hours and then hire homophobic security officers,” Houston-Pickett wrote in a post to social media about the incident.

Houston-Picket later told local Fox affiliate KRIV he was attending an LGBTQ-themed event with friends at Hamburger Mary’s on Saturday evening. He made what he called an innocent joke after they were told they would have to wait briefly before leaving. He said he grabbed a bottle of alcohol from the bar and jokingly said he needed a drink for the wait. He also said he put the bottle down immediately, and never took a drink.

A short while later, though, he said a large, well-built man with long hair approached him with two others right behind him.

“The only thing I remember, the words he said were ‘you said something to my sister?’” Houston-Pickett told KRIV adding, “then he hit me and that’s all I remember."

Video of the event later posted to social media shows one of the guards holding Houston-Pickett in a chokehold from behind, while the large guard knocks him unconscious with a single blow. The guard continues to punch the limp Houston-Pickett an additional 10 or more times. The DJ can be heard at the end of the video incredulously asking what is happening and telling the security guards to “chill.”

Houston-Pickett said he did nothing that warranted the attack.

“Anyone there can tell you that’s just not what happened at all, like they came charging with an agenda,” Houston-Pickett told KRIV when asked if he was aggressive with security guards.

On social media, Hamburger Mary’s advertised the event as a “Party With the Divas” with performances by Dessie Love-Blake, Petty Brooks, Alexxa Oasis, and Porsche Paris.

Houston-Pickett’s attorney, Carl A. Moore, told KRIV that so far Hamburger Mary’s has not responded to his inquiries and that he intends to work with the Houston Police Department regarding criminal charges against the security guards.
