A Sunday tweet sparked a heated conversation about homophobia and the mimosa-filled meal.
Brunch became a trending topic on Twitter Sunday -- and not due to mimosas.
In a conversation that confronted the implicit homophobia of anti-brunch sentiment, users debated whether straight men were allowed to enjoy brunch. The meal, typically served at restaurants on Sunday, is a portmonteau of breakfast and lunch that many perceive as being beloved by the gay community.
The debate appears to have begun by user @iamfatpapi, who declared, "Brunch is for bitches, men we go grab a drink right quick."
Outrage ensued.
“how you call yourself "Fat Daddy" and not enjoy a brunch? https://t.co/OTesmJfpT3”— Sneaky LinkedIn '23 (@Sneaky LinkedIn '23) 1499611269
Some users urged brunch haters to confront their own insecurities.
There was an inevitable "bottomless" joke.
And others addressed the hypocrisy of those who believe "brunch is gay."
“Your #MCM thinks brunch is gay but shares a bottles of liquor in VIP and splits it 10 ways with his homies. Oh. Ok.”— Brunch Noir (@Brunch Noir) 1499621454
“If brunch make you think of Gay sex you already had it on your mind buddy”— MonsterKing (@MonsterKing) 1499612754
And then there was the voice of reason.
“People have such strong opinions about brunch like it's not just breakfast a little later in the day.”— Alex Tumay (@Alex Tumay) 1499612872
Enjoy brunch!
