Equality California is going virtual.
The nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ organization is hosting its Golden State Equality Awards next month.
At the event, Equality California will honor Pete and Chasten Buttigieg with the Equality Trailblazer Award, the Netflix film Disclosure about transgender representation in media history, and the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, whose civil rights legacy will be remembered by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The online ceremony also features a star-studded lineup: host Angelica Ross (Pose) and performers Melissa Etheridge, Betty Who, Alex Newell, Shea Diamond, and Robin S. The names of other luminaries and honorees are forthcoming; many will be announced at a virtual cocktail hour before the livestream.
"2020 has challenged the LGBTQ+ community in ways we could never have imagined, but challenging times create heroes, and we cannot wait to come together virtually and celebrate some of this year's heroes," said Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur. "The Equality Awards are a critical opportunity for members of our community to honor the leaders and organizations whose selfless work helps to advance LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice."
The event will stream September 13 at 6 p.m. Pacific time for ticketed attendees. Buy tickets and learn more information at EQCA.org/equality-awards.
