Representation for LGBTQ+ people in media increased last weekend when out gay Cuban-American ABC News transportation correspondent Gio Benitez took his spot on set, joining the team of Good Morning America in his new role as co-anchor of the weekend program.
Last week, ABC News announced his promotion which took effect immediately.
On Saturday, during the show’s second hour, Benitez made his grand entrance, descending from a staircase to enthusiastic coworkers who cheered him on.
In a touching tribute that left Benitez in tears onstage, GMA’s producers played a montage of clips to celebrate the 37-year-old’s career that led to his joining the network’s flagship morning program.
Extra TV correspondent Tommy DiDario surprised Benitez, his husband of more than seven years, by joining him briefly for a reassuring embrace to share in the moment.
Now the role model for queer kids and kids of color will join the early risers and present the day’s exciting and noteworthy stories with the GMA weekend audience.
