Tommy Wu and Alan Reade continue to enlarge their inspiring and heart-warming photo project. Here are the latest additions.
In 2011 we began periodically posting images from Tommy and Alan's Men Over 50 Project. Yes, these are great examples of men of a certain age, but the stories of these men are more complicated than the outside packages. You can read below in Tommy and Alan's statement about the adversities may have faced, and you can hear audio of some of these men on their website. The good news is more men are turning 50 every day.
"Our latest batch of Men Over 50 photos portrays guys staying fit and healthy as they land firmly in middle age. These men, of varying sexual orientations, are not professional models, although a few have done modeling in their earlier years. We realize that some people will look at these photos and think these guys have it made, that life is easy for them, that fitness is a kind of currency they are wielding, but for most of these men their fitness focus evolved as a way to find needed balance or even to triumph over adversity. One of our models suffered serious health issues he had to address by losing weight and starting a health regimen. One of our models suffered bulimia and later went through a heart transplant. Several of our new batch of models immigrated to the U.S. to make new lives for themselves and encountered racism. On the positive side, most of the models altered careers as they realized new aptitudes and opportunities in their approach to 50. And one of our models found love and got married in his 50s, which in previous generations didn't happen often and certainly didn't happen between two men. The point is that we work to make our photos captivating, and if you look deeper you see stories of survival, resilience, and hard-won happiness. We plan to publish a Men Over 50 Project book in the spring of 2019." -- Tommy Wu and Alan Reade
