Arlene Gottfried, who died August 8 at the age of 66, was a photographer of the underrepresented and underprivileged. While Gottfried shot assignments for The New York Times, Life, and Newsweek, she was best known for her photographs of life on the streets of New York. It was Gottfried's identification that truly set her above the rest. It's clear that she identified with a queer viewpoint.
Gottfried is prominently featured in the film Gilbert, a documentary on her brother, the comedian Gilbert Gottfried. Her work has been published in five monographs and is held in collection at the Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Tang Teaching Museum, and the New York Public Library, among others.
Gottfried's exhibition, "A Lifetime of Wandering," is on view through April 28 at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York City.
