R. Dodson gets surprising results from a mostly minimal aesthetic: mostly natural light, a bed shoved into the corner with little notable bed dressing, and a curiosity about the male form. Dodson's images are so stripped-down that you become aware of the smallest details: flesh compressed by elastic, a spray of freckles, the way muscle wraps around bones, folllicles, and loads of youthful collagen. Here is what he told us about his work:
"I became a photographer as a way to document my friendships due to constant relocating. That was the main drawback of being a military child. When I eventually came to Wichita, I had established a style for myself, and it allowed me to work with people who would allow me to home in on that style. They allowed me to do the extravagantly themed shoots to the minimal lifestyle shoots that I had always hoped to do. I've been able to express myself in ways that draw people into my photography but make them want to be a part of it. Many people are drawn in by the sensuality I let shine through in my work. While this took me by surprise at first I was fortunate to have people that helped me continue it. Thankfully, photography has opened a lot of doors for me, from travel, meeting new people, and publishing my work. The opportunities alone have helped me realize how much I love my craft. Hopefully, I can continue to share my work with those who seek it out."
And if you seek it out, you can find it on his website and his Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube pages.
