Charity Kase's Demented Drag Is Perfect for Halloween

Creature and character designer Charity Kase is a London make-up and costume person who contacted us back in May to tell us how he was getting through the shutdown. The work and imagination he exhibits puts those of us who used the pandemic to gain 15 pounts to shame. He also has a great personal story (read his caption on the last portrait image.)

Marsyas the satyr picked up the an Aulos dropped by the goddess Athena and played it so well that he attracted the attention of Apollo, the god of music. The satyr's dangerous arrogance in playing the instrument ends in dire consequence for Marsyas after Apollo challenges him to a musical contest.

Throwback to the painting that changed my life
I painted this self-portrait when I was at the lowest point I had ever been mentally and physically. In 2015 I had just been diagnosed with HIV and my relationship which was my life and home at the time had fallen apart. I found myself with nowhere to go or live and a dark cloud above everything I did and everywhere I went. I stayed with my beautiful friend @celestialcoutures for a few nights and we spent time painting and creating. She encouraged me to paint this self portrait, and it was an eye opening experience for me. Seeing myself through my eyes in drag on a canvas made me feel somehow whole again and gave me the power and motivation to peruse drag more seriously. And seriously committed I was!
As I write this now I am super healthy, undetectable and extremely proud of my drag, work and how far I have come. I performed in bloody TOKYO and New York last year!?!
I simply can't thank enough the people who helped and supported me on my journey. I really wouldn't be in this place without them.
