Why should reporters expect answers?
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders rivals her predecessor when it comes to dodging tough questions from the press.
When asked a question about Donald Trump Jr. and the recent Russian meeting scandal, Sanders responded that to know the answer to a question she would have to ask the president.
The reporter asking the question wanted some clarification:
“-Are you saying you will ask him & get back to us?
-No, I said I *would* have to in order to answer that question.”— David Mack (@David Mack) 1501613721
Twitter users agreed: That was absolutely ice-cold.
Her refusal to answer begs the question:
“@davidmackau ”— David Mack (@David Mack) 1501613721
Some Twitter users believe they could step in for Sanders if they had to:
Sarah could have elaborated if she wanted to:
“@davidmackau I don't know the answer. I'd have to ask him before I'd know which I won't do because I don't want to know but otherwise I'd answer”— David Mack (@David Mack) 1501613721
All jokes aside, a press secretary who doesn't know the president's reaction on such a controversial issue and who is unwilling to follow up on it is a clear breach of norms.
It makes one wonder:
is the Trump administration interested in answering the press's questions at all or just stonewalling in hopes that reporters stop asking?
