Recently, Tennessee considered naming the Bible as its State Book. While the state gets points for nerve, the choice misses a number of must-read novels, memoirs, and other significant works that were either written by its natives or set in Tennessee.
To highlight these lovely works of literature, The Advocate compiled a list of noteworthy, provocative, and fun alternatives to the Good Book. So read 'em. And if lawmakers do, perhaps they will turn the page on their passage of anti-LGBT legislation.
