Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump showed support for LGBT people with the least amount of effort and it was not well-received.

Pride Month kicked off Thursday, and as was to sadly be expected -- following eight years of President Obama publicly marking the occasion and treating LGBT people with dignity and respect -- it was crickets at the Donald Trump White House. Trump and his administration ignored Pride Month entirely as he turned his limited attention to pulling out of the Paris Accord on the environment and continuing to gnash his teeth about Kathy Griffin's ill-advised photo holding his bloodied head. That is until his daughter and adviser Ivanka weighed in with a pro-LGBT tweet.

While the sentiment is perfectly fine, and it's nice? that she tried, her words rang hollow for LGBT people across the Twitterverse, with many Twitter users calling for action, not "lip service," and others frankly flipping her off metaphorically or in meme form. Ivanka Trump has often been touted as the voice of reason when it comes to her father's office and LGBT issues. She and husband Jared Kushner were credited with helping to quash and executive that would have rolled back Obama-era rights and protections for LGBT people in the workplace, according to Politico. But she hasn't gone far enough to ensure the safety of LGBT people considering that since her father took office, he has rescinded protections for trans kids in schools, appointed marriage equality opponent Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and signed a religious freedom order that on one hand did not make it outright legal to discriminate against LGBT people but gave religious organizations infinitely more power, which doesn't make the world safer for LGBT people. And that's not even delving into the fact that Donald Trump picked Mike Pence, a man who supports conversion therapy and who did endorse legal discrimination against LGBT people in his state of Indiana, as his second in command.

Following her original tweet, Ivanka Trump later thanked LGBT people for their contributions to the economy, which seems bizarre but actually makes total sense since Donald Trump is friendly with gay Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel. It's the "this is what can you do for me" approach to supporting LGBT rights.

While in theory, Trump may believe she's progressive on LGBT rights, she would need to put her words into real action to undo the terror Donald Trump and Pence have already rained down upon LGBT people. Unsurprisingly, Twitter had a field day calling out her hypocrisy, lack of action, etc.

Here are some responses to Ivanka Trump's "lip service."
