In April 2017, reports surfaced about the existence of gay concentration camps in the Chechen Republic, a semi-autonomous republic of Russia. Once again, the It Gets Better Project global network was reminded of the importance of sharing messages of hope with young LGBTQ people in Russia, particularly if it could empower them to seek out protection and safety from within the greater LGBTQ community of Russia.
The It Gets Better Project and its affiliates around the world shared this graphic (translated into multiple languages) on social media, and we received hundreds of empowering comments in response.
These responses are being compiled into a graphic video that will be shared on social media in July 2017, an important time as names are being released of those that perished in the concentration camps. Hopefully, with the help of our new affiliate team in St. Petersburg, this video can be shared with young people in or near Chechnya who are in need of support during this time.
