Stormy Daniels (born Stephanie Clifford), the adult film actress who claims to have had an affair with Donald Trump that began in 2006, this week filed a civil suit against him claiming that a nondisclosure agreement he forced her to sign prior to the 2016 presidential election is invalid because Trump failed to sign it.
Now one of Daniels's lawyers has hinted that there may be evidence of the relationship with Trump. However, evidence of an affair may do little to sway those who supported and voted for Trump after he admitted to grabbing women "by the pussy" without consent and after more than a dozen women came forward and accused him of sexual harassment and/or assault.
Appearing on NBC's Today show this morning, Daniels's attorney Michael Avenatti told Savannah Guthrie it's specious that Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 for the nondisclosure agreement from his personal fund to keep Daniels quiet without Trump knowing about it.
When Guthrie asked Avenatti if Daniels had hard evidence of the alleged affair like "photos, images, and text messages that verify [her] claim," he replied, "That's a question that Ms. Daniels will have to ultimately answer. ... I do know the answer and I'm not at liberty to disclose that this morning."
That's when he pivoted to the peculiarity of Trump's personal attorney paying Daniels for her silence, calling it "highly questionable."
"There's no question" that Trump knew about the payment "at the time," Avenatti said. He added, "There's many additional facts and evidence that we have, and we think that's gonna come to light."
Daniels claims in the lawsuit that she was spurred to come out about her affair with Trump following the release of the infamous Access Hollywood tape in which he admitted to grabbing women "by the pussy." But before she could come forward, Cohen presented her with the nondisclosure agreement, according to NPR.
Cohen admitted to paying Daniels $130,000 from his own pocket without Trump's knowledge but has declined to say why he paid her the money.
