California Judge Aaron Persky, who gave Turner a light sentence for sexual assault, was recalled by Santa Clara County voters.

Voters in Santa Clara County, Calif., removed Judge Aaron Persky from office in Tuesday's election. In 2016, Persky had sentenced Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner to just six months in prison on a sexual assault conviction, even though the law allowed for the sentence to be up to 14 years. Turner ended up being released after three months due to good behavior. Supporters of Persky's recall said he had a history of giving light sentences to perpetrators from privileged backgrounds. Recall opponents, however, voiced concern that judges would now feel pressure to impose harsher sentences, something that could have a disproportionate impact on the poor and minority groups.
