Thousands of activists gathered on June 30 at the steps of City Hall in Los Angeles for Families Belong Together: Freedom for Immigrants, in protest of the Trump administration's policy of forcibly separating children from their parents, the detention of families, and their failure to reunite countless children with their parents.
The event gave a voice to immigrants and refugees, and was part of a National "Families Belong Together" Day of Action, featuring over 650 events in all 50 states and an anchor protest in Lafayette Square in Washington D.C., where Lin-Manuel Miranda, America Ferrara, and Alicia Keys spoke. Tens of thousands of people across the nation showed up and spoke out against the Trump administration's policies.
The Los Angeles protest -- sponsored by CHIRLA, National Domestic Workers Alliance, the Center for Popular Democracy Action, MoveOn, Women's March LA, ACLU of SoCal, Korean Resource Center, Fair Immigration Reform Movement, and United We Dream -- brought in speakers like Laverne Cox, Sen. Kamala Harris, Mayor Eric Garrett, activist Bamby Salcedo, Sen. Kevin De Leon, among others.
