Former Cheers star Kirstie Alley is in the spotlight this week after she tweeted out on Sunday that she'll be voting for Donald Trump for a second time this November.
"I'm voting for @realDonaldTrump because he's NOT a politician," she tweeted, drawing the ire of peers and fans alike.
“I’m voting for @realDonaldTrump because he’s NOT a politician. I voted for him 4 years ago for this reason and shall vote for him again for this reason. He gets things done quickly and he will turn the economy around quickly. There you have it folks there you have it🙄”— Kirstie Alley (@Kirstie Alley) 1602976226
Alley went on to explain her reasons for supporting the president, who has stoked racial violence and led a disastrous response to a global pandemic. "I voted for him 4 years ago for this reason and shall vote for him again for this reason," the former TV star and current Scientologist tweeted. "He gets things done quickly and he will turn the economy around quickly. There you have it folks there you have it."
Trump's delayed response to the coronavirus led to the U.S. becoming a world leader in cases and deaths, and in the four years he's been president (a politician), he's only made the economy worse. So it's unclear what Alley is referring to.
Her tweets were immediately met with criticism on Twitter. Alley received harsh tweets from Mike Birbiglia, Patricia Arquette, and Judd Apatow, among others. But it was drag queens who had the harshest words for her.
“@kirstiealley @realDonaldTrump Maybe he can MAKE YOUR CAREER GREAT AGAIN! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂”— Kirstie Alley (@Kirstie Alley) 1602976226
RuPaul's Drag Race season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon responded to the claim that Trump gets things done quickly by saying, "like contributing to the death of over 200,000 citizens. That DID happen pretty quickly."
Season 6 winner, drag icon Bianca Del Rio threw in her own read, tweeting "Maybe he can MAKE YOUR CAREER GREAT AGAIN!" Alley's last significant TV or movie role was in season 2 of Ryan Murphy's Scream Queens in 2016 before Trump was in office.
Alley didn't take kindly to the reaction, blocking Del Rio, as well as many others. Cheers to Bianca, Jinkx, and everyone else who tweeted at her.
