Boy Asks Pete Buttigieg for Advice on Being Brave and Coming Out as Gay

In a touching moment during a rally, Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg gave advice to a 9-year-old boy who wanted to know how to be "brave" like the candidate and tell people he's gay.

At a rally in Denver, Colo. on Saturday, Zachary Ro's question was read aloud.

"Thank you for being so brave. Would you help me tell the world I'm gay too? I want to be brave like you," Ro asked before taking the stage with the candidate.

"I don't think you need a lot of advice from me on bravery. You seem pretty strong," Buttigieg said.

"It took me a long time to figure out how to tell even my best friend that I was gay, let alone to go out there and tell the world," he added. "To see you willing to come to terms with who you are in a room full of thousands of people you've never met..."

Then, Buttigieg, who's made history as an openly gay presidential candidate with his husband Chasten Buttigieg often by his side, offered some advice to the young man.

"It won't always be easy, but that's OK because you know who you are. When you know who you are you have a center of gravity that can hold you together when all kinds of chaos is happening around you," he said.

Referring to feedback he's gotten about how running for president as an openly gay man, Buttigieg told Ro that he could be a model for others to come out.

"You'll never know who's taking their lead from you, who's watching you and deciding that they can be a little braver because you have been brave," Buttigieg said. "You'll never know whose life you might be affecting right now just by standing here."
