An aide to U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney gay-baited Cheney's colleague Matt Gaetz as the two Republican members of Congress continue to feud over the latest impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.

Gaetz, a representative from Florida, is among those seeking to oust Cheney from her position as chair of the Republican House Conference because of her support for impeachment. He's traveling to Cheney's home state of Wyoming this week for a rally where GOPers will call for her to step down. To promote the event, he tweeted that "Wyoming can do better."

In response, a spokesperson for Cheney told the Washington Examiner, "Rep. Gaetz can leave his beauty bag at home. In Wyoming, the men don't wear makeup."

The remark probably refers to a scene in an HBO documentary, The Swamp, showing Gaetz applying makeup before appearing on television, The Hill reports.

Gaetz responded by telling The Hill, "Liz Cheney represents a vision of the Republican Party that does not energize anyone outside of the Washington, D.C., Beltway." As conference chair, she is the third-ranking House Republican, after Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise.

The sole House member from Wyoming, Cheney was one of only 10 Republicans to support bringing an article of impeachment against Trump for his role in inciting the rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol January 6. The trial is set to begin in the Senate the week of February 8. While Trump is already out of office, a conviction in the Senate would not only hold him accountable but would enable senators to conduct another vote that would bar him from running for office again.

Gaetz is a staunch defender of Trump, and Cheney's aide could have criticized him on that or his policy positions but chose to go to a place of homophobia and gender policing with the makeup remark. Cheney, by the way, has a lesbian sister, Mary. The sisters have famously clashed over Liz Cheney's opposition to marriage equality, but Mary recently praised Liz for standing up to Trump.

The rally where Gaetz will appear is scheduled for Thursday in Cheyenne.
