Mace, an anti-LGBTQ+ Republican South Carolina congresswoman, invited Crockett, a Texas Democrat, to “take it outside” when the latter pointed to the GOP lawmaker’s constant attacks on transgender people.

TexasDemocratic U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s office has denounced South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace’s actions during a heated exchange Tuesday in the House Oversight Committee, describing her behavior as a “performative meltdown” intended to divert attention from meaningful policy discussions. Crockett’s spokesperson, Chloe Kessock, criticized Mace for threatening physical violence and resorting to inflammatory rhetoric in remarks to The Advocate.

“It’s clear that Rep. Mace was threatening physical violence against Congresswoman Crockett as part of her performative, ridiculous meltdown in the House Oversight Committee room. Her slur-ridden screed exemplifies exactly why the House Oversight Committee needs to pass Congresswoman Crockett’s amendment to reinstate the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties,” Kessock said.

Kessock further accused Mace of leveraging anti-trans rhetoric to mask her lack of substantive policy proposals. “Whenever Republicans need to distract the American people from the fact that they have no real policy prescriptions to protect the lives and livelihoods of American women, they run back to their old reliable: demonize trans folk. Rep. Mace’s 1990s-era slurs and bathroom fantasies don’t do a thing to protect women — reproductive rights do. But protecting women’s civil rights and liberties fall far below Rep. Mace’s current goal: raising money from the MAGA base and dethroning Marjorie Taylor Greene as MAGA’s most camera-hungry Congresswoman.”

In previous years, Greene, a Georgia Republican, has targeted the LGBTQ+ community and specifically transgender people with some of the most bigoted remarks of any lawmaker.

“If Rep. Mace wants to raise money off the back of a qualified Black woman, she can try someone else,” Crockett’s spokesperson added.

What did Rep. Nancy Mace say to Rep. Jasmine Crockett?

The criticism toward Mace stems from an incident in which the Republican invited Crocket to “take it outside.” The moment quickly became a focal point of the hearing.

As Crockett advocated for reinstating the subcommittee on civil rights and criticized Mace’s repeated targeting of transgender individuals, Mace interrupted in a flash of rage. “I can see that somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now. So [Mace] is gonna keep saying ‘trans, trans, trans, trans’ so that people will feel threatened, and chile, listen —” Crockett began, only for Mace to interject loudly, “I am no child, do not call me a child, I am no child.”

Mace then shocked the room with her remark: “If you want to take it outside, we can do that,” she said angrily, gesticulating.

Florida Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost defended Crockett, labeling Mace’s words a thinly veiled threat. Committee Chair James Comer, aKentucky Republican, attempted to downplay the incident, claiming Mace’s comments could be interpreted as an invitation for a private conversation over coffee or beer.

What did Rep. Crockett mean about Rep. Mace focusing so much on transgender people?

The confrontation adds to Mace’s growing record of antagonism toward the LGBTQ+ community. Following the historic election of Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride as Congress’s first out transgender member, Mace proposed a measure banning transgender women from female bathrooms on Capitol Hill. She openly admitted that the measure targeted the trailblazing Democrat. Since McBride’s election, Mace has taken on the role of the new congresswoman’s arch-enemy.

Mace’s combative rhetoric extends beyond the hearing room. Recently, she accused a foster care advocate of assault, claiming injuries from a firm handshake during an event. Despite eyewitness accounts disputing her allegations, Mace pressed charges, appearing publicly with braces and slings to emphasize her claims. Critics have highlighted the apparent hypocrisy of someone who portrayed themselves as a victim of a handshake threatening violence against a fellow lawmaker.

Mace’s spokesperson, Gabrielle Lipsky, did not answer The Advocate’s questions but pointed to the lawmaker’s X, formerly Twitter, account, “where you will find a plethora of answers to each and every one of these questions.”

On X, Mace positioned herself as the victim, writing: “When a Republican woman gets assaulted the Left says it never happened. When a Democrat says to a rape victim their fear of rape is a ‘fantasy,’ the Left celebrates it and then accuses the rape victim of violence. Got it.”

Mace also shared a tweet from Libs of TikTok, the extremist anti-LGBTQ+ hate account, containing a video of New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s floor speech opposing the recently passed Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025. Adding her commentary, Mace wrote, “Self-hating woman who wants underage girls to be forced to undress in front of men and boys in the locker room. Groomer.”

In her speech, Ocasio-Cortez condemned the legislation, which prohibits transgender girls and women from competing in sports aligned with their gender identity. She argued the bill perpetuates harmful gender norms and exposes children to invasive practices under the guise of fairness.

Crockett, a steadfast advocate for civil rights, later described Mace as “an attention-seeking loser” in a post on X, dismissing her behavior. “Last I checked, threatening members in a committee room doesn’t exactly reduce the cost of eggs,” she wrote.
