In his short Democratic convention speech Wednesday evening, gay California Assembly speaker John Perez hit many major LGBT rights issues. Perez's speech harped on the message that re-electing President Obama would be synonymous with fighting for more opportunities.

"In too many states, even some folks who have a job wake up every morning worrying that they may lose their job simply for being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. We fight for them," he said to applause. He later added, "He helped repeal 'don't ask, don't tell,' giving LGBT Americans the opportunity to openly and proudly serve our nation in uniform. And he's standing up for the right of those of us in LGBT community to say 'I do.'"

Perez's remarks hit the broader points of the Democratic platform, including fighting for more affordable higher education, better job opportunities, reproductive rights, and immigrant rights.

The convention has included several gay and lesbian speakers delivering remarks from stage, including Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado, DNC Treasurer Andrew Tobias and SEIU President Mary Kay Henry. Outgoing Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts will speak tomorrow during the convention's final night, and so will Rep. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, who is running for a Senate seat there.
