The House Ethics Committee announced on Thursday that it will investigate gay Republican U.S. Rep. George Santos of New York. The freshman lawmaker has been accused of lying about his finances and sexual misconduct — as well as a host of other things ranging from his professional career to attending college.

The Ethics Committee released a statement saying that it had voted unanimously on February 28 to establish a subcommittee dedicated to investigating the accusations against Santos.

Santos will be investigated for engaging in unlawful activity with respect to his 2022 congressional campaign; failing to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House; violating federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a firm providing fiduciary services; and/or engaging in sexual misconduct towards an individual seeking employment in his congressional office, according to a press release.

U.S. Rep. David Joyce of Ohio, a Republican, will serve as the chair for the subcommittee and Rep. Susan Wild, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, will serve as its ranking member. Florida Republican Rep. John Rutherford and Maryland Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey will also serve on the subcommittee.

In the release, the committee noted that creating the subcommittee doesn’t mean a violation of House rules occurred.
