This means it's time for Christian parents to remove their children from 'government schools,' Perkins tells antigay activist Gordon Klingenschmitt.

It's time for Christian parents to pull their children out of "government schools," says right-wing leader Tony Perkins, because... marriage equality.

At last month's Western Conservative Summit, fellow antigay activist Gordon Klingenschmitt interviewed Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, about the effects of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling for nationwide marriage equality, which had come down the day before. "Will this decision be used as a pretext to reeducate children?" Klingenschmitt asked in the interview, posted online Friday as part of Klingenschmitt's Pray in Jesus Name program.

"They're already doing this without the decision," Perkins replied. But it's going to get worse, he said. "With this decision, this will be used as a club to force conformance across the spectrum. ... Now, I think we're at a point where parents have to seriously consider removing their children from government schools that are going to be teaching and indoctrinating their children into immoral sexuality and this redefinition of marriage."

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
