South Florida's talk radio scene is now a lot gayer, thanks to new on-air personalities Tom and Kendall.
Tom Hantazarides and Kendall Rumsey have been hosting on WBZT 1230 AM Tuesdays at 7 p.m. since April of this year, and their hour-long program -- aptly titled Get Out! -- has the sole purpose of giving listeners news of "the positive impact that the gay community has on South Florida."
"I've likened it to a gay Today show," said Hantazarides in a video interview with South Florida's Sun Sentinel. "We inform, and we entertain."
The pair would like to have a largee presence. "If Rush Limbaugh can have three hours a day, I'll take three hours a day," said Rumsey. "We're a lot cuter than he is, and I think we're probably as smart as he is too."
The Sun Sentinel notes that Get Out! reaches viewers over a wide range of Florida's southeast coast and that it is believed to be the region's only gay radio talk show, since The Qiew of Fort Lauderdale vanished from the airwaves.
The hosts are clear about what they want listeners to feel when they listen to their program, which now boasts sponsors but started with money from their own pockets. "What I'd like them to walk away with, is 'Boy, you, know, I'm OK. I'm really OK.'" said Hantazarides. "There are so many different areas where the gay community has made an impact."
