Nondiscrimination laws that require businesses to serve everyone equally are a 'nail in the coffin of the morality of this nation,' says the right-wing preacher.

If there was any doubt that Pat Robertson would approve of allowing businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples, the televangelist certainly removed it today.

His cohost on The 700 Club, Terry Meeuwsen, read an inquiry from a viewer who noted that the Christian owners of a bridal shop in her area came under fire for refusing service to a same-sex couple. The viewer, "Susan," wanted to know Robertson's position on the matter.

"If you have a strong belief that enabling a same-sex marriage is wrong ... there's no way that a government should force somebody to do that," he responded. "It is an outrageous invasion of religious liberty and a trampling of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution." Antidiscrimination laws that would force businesses to serve those customers are "just one more nail in the coffin of the morality of this nation."

Robertson went on to equate such laws with one that would require bars to serve only nonalcoholic drinks. Watch the clip below, courtesy of Right Wing Watch.

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
