Longtime homophobe Pat Robertson is showing signs of throwing in the towel on marriage equality -- he still opposes it, but he realizes there isn't much he can do to gay people's effort to "destroy marriage," as he puts it.

On Wednesday's edition of The 700 Club, Robertson addressed a viewer, Jacob, who wondered what to do about the fact that his son, who is in a same-sex marriage, is planning to adopt a child.

Robertson, naturally, denounced the couple's relationship and their parenting plans, but he conceded that earthly powers can't stand in their way.

"This so-called lifestyle -- I just can't believe it, they have tried to destroy marriage," Robertson said. "Marriage is between a man and a woman and they've now brought cases to the Supreme Court saying, well, the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and so forth. So what should you do? You better get on your knees and pray and let the Lord take care of it because there isn't a whole lot else you can do."

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
