You may never have heard of Morehead, Ky., but you've likely heard of the county of which it resides: Rowan. That county is home to Kim Davis, the antigay clerk who absolutely refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and was eventually jailed for her intransigence. Even though federa; cpirts eventually intervened and allowed same-sex couples to obtain licenses in the area, Rowan County — and its seat, Morehead — still feel the repercussions of Davis's actions. The good news is that Davis may have inadvertently served as impetus for the first-ever Pride event in Morehead.
The first annual Morehead Pride festival was hosted this weekend by Cadillac Seville, who also performed in Davis drag, raising money for AIDS Volunteers, Inc. They had over 50 vendors and close to a 1,000 guests — not bad for an inaugural event in a sparsely populated county.
Thanks to photographers Michael Wallace for the day festival photos, and after-party photos from Christina Conroy. Organizer David Moore told us, “This was the first time drag was performed at a festival or club in our town, really in all of eastern Kentucky.”
