On these sunny days, Seattle Pride believes in fostering goodwill and friendly relationships across borders. Read more below.
A message from Seattle Pride: A border is a line that separates geographic or political areas. Borders can also represent a historical divide between cultural or linguistic lineages. Our theme Pride Beyond Borders recognizes that intersectionality within the LGBTQ+ community. It celebrates our differences and our places of origin. It is also a reminder that there is still work to be done to keep LGBTQ+ individuals safe from discrimination and violence, regardless of the borders that surround them.
LGBTQ+ individuals can be found in every country, as can their struggle for a life with dignity and equal rights. For example, there are 76 countries where being gay is criminalized and even punishable by death. Some individuals believe in reinforcing our borders as a way of insulating us from the troubles of others. But there are still struggles within our own borders too; like the 27 transgender people killed last year, 24 of whom were people of color.
Instead of insulating ourselves, Seattle Pride believes in fostering goodwill and friendly relationships across borders. We believe in coming together, as a global community, to share solutions to the world's problems. That is the message behind this year's parade theme, and that is our vision for Pride Beyond Borders.
