The Los Angeles Dodgers game against the New York Mets Friday night helped kick off Pride Month in L.A.
The Dodgers even took to the field in special Pride caps.
Their fans were decked out in rainbow paraphernalia, and the caps and Pride-themed Dodger jerseys were available to purchase by those in attendance. Leading up to the game, the Dodgers sold more than 18,000 special Pride ticket packages, which include a rainbow-trimmed jersey along with a ticket to the game, reports Outsports.
Celebrities featured at the game included JoJo Siwa, Wils, and Gigi Gorgeous. During the pregame ceremonies, gay former Dodgers player Glenn Burke's family honored the him by throwing out the game's ceremonial first pitch. He played for the Dodgers in the 1970s, but the team traded him away after management learned he was gay, supposedly having offered him a bonus if he married a woman. Current Dodgers officials have said if that was indeed the way it happened, it was a wrongheaded action. Most of his teammates had known he was gay and said they didn't care. Burke played briefly for the Oakland A's, then retired due to injuries and the homophobia he'd encountered, and came out publicly after retiring. He died in 1995 of complications from AIDS.
The Dodgers won the Friday game 6-1.
