Capital Pride was back in full force on Saturday after having scaled back events for the past couple of years. While a shooting scare panicked the crowd after the march, the event was without incident. Organizers even said it could have been one of the largest Capital Prides yet.
The march started a few hours after March for Our Lives, which was aimed at rallying against gun violence. Many participants attended both happenings.
Capital Pride has a long history. The origins go back to 1975, according to local TV station WRC. Deacon Maccubbin, the owner of the LGBTQ+ bookstore Lambda Rising helped celebrate Gay Pride Day. Maccubin said that over 2,000 people came out that day and gave organizers hope the celebration would succeed.
"There's always a need for a community, for people to have a place they can go to, to be with their people," Maccubbin told the outlet.
To celebrate Pride in the nation's capital, here are 88 photos of pure queer joy!
