As Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis goes to jail over her ostensibly faith-based refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, antigay televangelist Pat Robertson says gays won't rest until all who disagree with them are imprisoned or otherwise punished.

Today on his TV show, The 700 Club, Robertson said that jailing Davis for contempt of court "is nonsense," as he claimed -- falsely -- that she is not obligated to abide by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.

"But it will happen and it's just the beginning -- it's the warm-up of this battle," he continued. "And I want you to know right now, you've heard it here, the gays do not just want to be recognized, they do not want to be accepted, they do not want to have just freedom, they want everybody to agree with them, and everybody who doesn't agree with them and does not comport with their way of thinking, they want to be punished, put in jail, or fined. That's the way they want it and you might as well get used to it."

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
