A gay Missouri teen's classmates started a social media campaign that ignited a nationwide discussion about the freedom of expression for young LGBT students after he was cited by school administrators last Friday for wearing "distracting" clothing.

Morgan Ball, a 17-year-old male student at Lee's Summit North High School, was wearing jewelry, makeup, a black beaded shrug, black lace gloves, and a black statement belt on his birthday, March 13, when a school official told him his outfit was too "distracting" and "for women," as reported by ABC News.

According to a public Facebook post by Morgan's mother, Cheri Ball, some of the school's students and staff members complained that her son's outfit was a distraction, and he was asked to remove remove his shrug, gloves, and belt twice during the course of the school day.

"He was very upset and embarrassed, especially since he is one of the most respectful, kind, and compassionate students at the school," Cheri Ball said in her post. "This young man is an exemplary student and deserves the school's support."

When word got around of what happened to Morgan, his friends and peers started the hashtag #ClothingHasNoGender on various social media sites (particularly Twitter) in an effort to show solidarity. The hashtag eventually gave rise to a website, Facebook fan page, YouTube videos, and T-shirts.

The outpouring of support for Morgan will continue throughout next week. next Monday many LSNHS students are planning to wear their #ClothingHasNogender T-shirts, and next Tuesday will be a planned "Gender Swap" day, Kansas City TV station KSHB reports.

"The support has been tremendous," Morgan's father, Jason Ball, said in a statement to ABC News. "What could have been the worst birthday in his life turned into the best birthday of his life."
