A transgender teen was verbally harassed and then beaten by a group of her fellow students at Hercules High School in Hercules, Calif., reports San Francisco TV station KGO.

The attack was caught on video by another student, who recorded the incident with a cell phone. School officials say the fight broke out after some female students began verbally harassing the trans teen about her gender identity. Though the trans student was the first to initiate physical contact and all those involved in the fight could face disciplinary action, school officials say the altercation was the result of bullying over a period of time and are standing beside the trans student in this incident.

"After being under stressful situations day after day of being teased and talked about, obviously at some point you're going to explode," Charles Ramsey of the West Contra Costa School Board told KGO.

The girls who were responsible for the attack had been given a warning only two days before the altercation occurred after the trans teen had complained to school administrators about being bullied.

However, counselors at the Bay Area school are hoping students can learn a lesson about acceptance in the aftermath of the attack.

"They're teenagers," health services coordinator Rachel Delgado told KGO. "Their frontal lobe is not completely developed. And I think that's where we come into play; to talk to them about tolerance and supporting and supporting each other."
