Fourth Time's a Charm
Dutch speed skater Ireen Wust picked up her fourth medal Wednesday, this time winning silver in the women's 5,000-meter event. As the women from the Netherlands have been dominating speed skating throughout these games, there's no doubt that Friday's team pursuit competition will be fascinating to watch. Wust finished three seconds behind Martina Sablikova of Czech Republic (who won a silver medal last week in the 3,000-meter event), and Carien Kleibeuker, also from the Netherlands, finished third. The bi skater will anchor the women's team, along with 1,500-meter bronze medalist Lotte Van Beek, 1,500-meter gold medalist Jorien Ter Mors, and Marrit Leenstra, who came in fourth in the women's 1,500-meter event.
Not-So-Quiet Riot
The women of Pussy Riot were beaten by five Cossacks and one man with a whip at a demonstration about 20 miles away from Olympic Park. Video captured by the Associated Press shows members being thrown to the ground and having their masks violently ripped off, in a public plaza. The Washington Post reports that the stunt was an attempt to film a music video for their new protest song, "Putin Will Teach You How to Love Your Motherland."
Family Feud
A couple of days ago, the father of Australian snowboarder Belle Brockhoff aired his anger over what he called a lack of respect for his gay daughter and other athletes who felt neglected or underfunded by the Australian Olympic Committee. He sent a letter to the AOC, saying that he sold his tickets to the games in protest, as his daughter and some of the other athletes were not afforded the same training facilities as others. He later apologized for sending such a letter during competition, because it became a distraction. Belle Brockhoff had remained mum on the issue until Wednesday, when she tweeted the following:
The '90s: More Neon, Please
If you were a kid in the '90s and you were obsessed with figure skating, you probably have an affinity for the likes of Kristi Yamachuchi if you like to smile, and Suraya Bonaly or Oksana Baiyul if you're a badass. BuzzFeed's roundup of figure skating fashion will bring you back to a time of lace, ridiculous geometric shapes, and bad uses of neon.
And speaking of the stunning Kristi Yamachuchi, here's an interview with her, where she talks about Beyonce, receiving telegrams during the 1992 games, and Tinder:
