Ukrainian tennis pro Sergiy Stakhovsky may not be a household name, but he is making a racket about lesbian and gay players.

Until now, Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky's only claim to fame was beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013.

But according to Australia's 9 News, remarks the "Ukrainian tennis legend" made, asserting that there are no gay male players and that every other female player "is a lesbian," are bound to change that.

The 29-year-old's outrageous comments about his competitors were eclipsed only by his declaration that he would never let his daughter play tennis for that reason.

The Australian news source cites an interview Stakhovsky gave to a reporter from aUkrainian news outlet Xsport, who asked if any of the players on the tennis tour were "representatives of sexual minorities."

"We have a normal atmosphere," he responded. He continued, "If there was anything, we'd know about it, because it's a very closed circle.... In the backbone of the top 100 there are definitely no gays."

The reporter cited tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who in March said in an interview, "I would certainly like to see more players come out. I can't believe that there is never been a male player that has taken that step. But with each passing celebrity coming out or athlete, it becomes less of a big deal and that's eventually what we want it to be, for it not just to matter."

According to the report, Stakhovsky was offended by her comment, saying Navratilova "has no clue at all what men's tennis is."

"On the [Women's Tennis Association] tour, almost every other player is a lesbian," he added. "Can you imagine -- half of them. So I for sure won't send my daughter to play tennis."

Stakhovsky was asked to elaborate, and he, ostensibly joking, said he would have to buy a gun if his daughter ever married a tennis player. He then clarified that he would respect his daughter's choice.

Currently ranked 49th in the world, Stakhovsky has not made it past the second round in any of the Grand Slam tournaments this year. At Wimbledon, he lost in five sets to 18-year-old Croatian Borna Coric.
