The change comes after trans Kansans represented by Lambda Legal filed suit.
State officials had previously said they would not comply with a court injunction making the changes to birth certificates easier for transgender residents.Â
State officials are rejecting an order issued by a judge Thursday.
Judge Michael Moses said his earlier order to revert to a simple process to change the gender marker was "clear as a bell."
The legislation defines gender as "the innate and immutable characteristics established at conception."
The new rule mirrors an old rule which was defeated in court.
